How One True Story Creates a False Narrative

A story can be completely true and still be used to mislead you. In this week’s Spot the Spin, Chris breaks down the hasty generalization fallacy: when politicians and pundits take one example, a tiny sample, or an isolated incident and present it as proof of a widespread problem. Before accepting the claim, ask three questions: How many examples are there? How representative are they? What is the denominator? An anecdote may prove that something happened. It cannot prove how often it happens or how large the problem really is. Stay fierce. Stay independent.
