Tennessee Found a Legal Loophole to Rig the Map

What happens when politicians cannot win over voters? They change which voters count. Tennessee lawmakers moved to allow mid-decade redistricting as Republicans faced concerns about losing political power. When the new map was challenged, the state openly argued that its motivation was political, not racial. That distinction exposed a disturbing legal loophole: when race and political affiliation overlap, lawmakers can claim they are targeting Democrats rather than Black voters. The lawsuit is not over, and the court’s ruling was only preliminary. But the larger problem is already clear. Gerrymandering allows politicians to choose their voters, weakens competitive elections, rewards ideological extremes, and makes elected officials less accountable to the public. Republican gerrymandering is not justified because Democrats have done it. Democratic gerrymandering is not justified because Republicans do it.
